Philip Freije


Philip Freije Freije, Philip COHOES Philip J. Freije, 87, of Saratoga Street, Cohoes, died at his home on Sunday, January 7, 2007. Born in Troy, N.Y. on February 26, 1919, he was the son of the late Fred and Mary Ferris Freije. He graduated from St. Mary's School in Troy. In 1937, he moved to Cohoes and worked in the family grocery business. During World War II, he served in the United States Coast Guard which operated as part of the United States Navy during war time. He was assigned to the South Pacific and served on board the cutter, Redbud. After the war, Philip attended photography school in New York City then returned to work for the family business, the Big Value Super Market in Cohoes. During the 1950s, he owned and operated his own ice cream and candy shop on Remsen Street in Cohoes. During the 1960s and 1970s, he worked part-time for the New York State Assembly in downtown Albany. He was a devout Catholic and member of Saint Joseph's Parish in Cohoes. He was a past grand knight of the Cohoes chapter of the Knights of Columbus. He was also a member of the American Legion and a lifetime member of the VFW. He and his great friends from the Knights and the American Legion enjoyed traveling. He was the brother of Fred Freije, Margaret Freije and Mary Freije, all of Cohoes and Joseph Freije of Waterford, and the late George Freije, Charles Freije and Theresa Freije Luke. Uncle of William Luke and Ann Marie Luke Ballard of Latham, Charles Luke of Lake George, Fred Freije of Troy and Barbara Freije Preston of Albany. Also survived by several great-nieces and great-nephews. Funeral services will be held Thursday at 8:30 a.m. from the Marra Funeral Home, corner of Remsen and Columbia St's, Cohoes and at 9:00 a.m. from St. Joseph's Church, Cohoes. Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Troy. Calling hours will be Wednesday from 4-8 p.m. Those who wish may make donations in Mr. Freije's memory to the Community Hospice of Rensselaer County, 295 Valley View Blvd., Rensselaer, NY 12144.
