The Freije / Ferris Family History

Sixteen year old Fuad Freije arrived to Ellis Island in 1902. One by one, he and many of his family members left their homes in Zahle, Lebanon. At the time Lebanon was part of Syria and was under the Turkish rule of the Ottoman Empire. Many Lebanese Maronite Christians and Orthodox Christians fled their homeland for religious and political freedom. Freedom was the promise America offered. Fuad Freije resided in Brooklyn, New York. He relocated to Troy, New York between 1906 and 1907. In Troy he took the name Fred Freije. There he opened a Fruit Store on Congress Street. In 1916 Fred Freije married Mary Ferris-Fayad of Batroun, Lebanon. She and her family immigrated to the United States of America in 1907. In Troy, New York they raised 8 children. The family would eventually move directly across the Hudson river to Cohoes, New York. They would own and operate the Big Value Supermarkets on Remsen Street and Main Street in Cohoes, New York and Broad Street in Waterford, New York.
