George Freije


George J. Freije; a Cohoes merchant COHES – George J. Freije Sr., 61 of 228 Saratoga St. owner of the Fountain Center in Cohoes, died Saturday at his residence after a long illness. Born in Troy, he was the son of Mary Ferris Freije of Cohoes and the late Fuad Freije. He lived in Cohoes most of his life. For 12 years, Mr. Freije was owner of the Fountain Center, which deals in garden equipment and supplies. Prior to this, he operated a grocery store and then the IGA Big Value store with his family in Cohoes. He was a veteran of World War II, serving as a storekeeper, third class, in the U.S, Navy. Mr. Freije was a communicant of St. Rita’s Church in Cohoes and was past president of the American-Syrian Club. His first wife was the late Mildred Forsythe. Survivors, in addition to his mother include his wife, Helen Gachosh Freije; one daughter Barbara Freije Allyn of Cohoes’ two sons, George J. Freije Jr. of Baltimore, Md. And Fred C. Freije of Cohoes’ one step-daughter Mrs. George Kluchesky of St. Josephs Mich; one step-son, Bruce M. Goyette of Malta; three sisters, Margaret and Mary Freije, both of Cohoes and Mrs. Brian Stancil of Shreveport, La; four brothers, Charles, Philip and Fred Freije, all of Cohoes and Joseph Freije of Waterford; two grand children and several nieces and nephews. The funeral will be held at 9 a.m. Tuesday from the Fitzgerald Funeral Home, 105 Vliet Blvd., Cohoes and at 9:30 a.m. from St. Rita’s Church Cohoes, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be offered. Internment will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery in Waterford.
